From cells to body, bricks to city, humans have long been fascinated by how complexity emerges from simple parts. The three-hour workshop explores this elemental logic and its potential in experimental types. We will draw connections from art to architecture, from cast metal type to post-digital typography, to investigate how rules, repetition, and variation open up creative possibilities.

Through the guided process of observation, deconstruction and assembly, we will extract visual motifs from our surroundings, translate them into a “stroke family,” and ultimately build a system of letterforms. You’ll learn to think in components and connection logic, discovering how the micro can accumulate into macro expressions of form and meaning.

The workshop is a part of the Experimental Type Design course by Jialun (Jaylen) Wang.
